Present Condition of the Descendants of the Mughal Emperors – A Brief Overview
1. Sultana Begum
- Claims to be the great-granddaughter-in-law of the last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar.
- Currently lives in a small, dilapidated house in Howrah, near Kolkata, West Bengal.
- Receives a modest government pension of about ₹6,000 per month.
- Once filed a claim over ownership of the Red Fort in Delhi, but in 2025, the Supreme Court of India dismissed her plea.
2. General Condition
- Many descendants of Bahadur Shah Zafar live scattered across India, especially in Aurangabad (Maharashtra) and Kolkata (West Bengal).
- Most live in poverty, far removed from the royal luxury of their ancestors.
- Some work as small traders, laborers, or run tea stalls. There is no official recognition or special privilege for them today.
3. Historical Background
- The Mughal dynasty ruled large parts of India for over 300 years.
- In 1857, during the First War of Independence, the last emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar was captured by the British and exiled to Rangoon (in present-day Myanmar), where he died in 1862.
- One of his surviving sons, Mirza Quraish Shikoh, lived in Aurangabad and later in Hyderabad. His descendants spread to different parts of India.
Where Are They Now?
| Region | Situation |
|---|---|

| Population | Dozens in Kolkata, about 200 in Aurangabad, others scattered in different parts of India and Pakistan |
| Legal Claims | Supreme Court rejected claim over Red Fort |
| Status | No royal rights, treated as ordinary citizens under the Constitution of India |
Emotional Perspective
Although India values Mughal monuments and heritage—like the Taj Mahal, Red Fort, and Humayun’s Tomb—very little attention is given to the living descendants of the dynasty. The contrast between the grandeur of the monuments and the poverty of the descendants is striking.
